Many systems of law also contain religious precepts or laws that are derived from the scriptures and are inseparable from religion. These include Jewish Halakha and Islamic Sharia as well as Christian canon law.

These legal systems are primarily a legislative system, but they also provide room for the judiciary to develop rules to respond to changes in social or political needs. In addition to its central role in establishing the social contract between the state and the citizenry, law is fundamental to international peace and security, economic development and social progress, and the protection of rights and fundamental freedoms.

The rule of law is a foundational element for achieving the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals. It is also an integral part of a democratic society.
